Summary: You'll want to wear your hair in a low, loose braid or ponytail at the nape of your neck and use a silk or satin bonnet or pillowcase. (how-to videos posted below)
Why should I protect my hair at night? This combo will keep your hair softer and frizz-free for longer as well as prevent breakage, dryness and tension spots. All while preserving your style for the next day!
Who is this for? These rules are great for anyone, and especially good for those with extensions like Wefts and K-Tips, and even for people with toppers like Mesh or Meshless Integration. Keep in mind, any type of extension or topper with clips should always be removed before bed.
Option 1. Low Pony with a satin or silk scrunchie
Gather your hair into a low, loose ponytail at the nape of your neck and secure it with a silk or satin scrunchie.
Keep the ponytail loose enough that it isn't creating tension at your roots or on your extensions.
Option 2. low, loose braid
A loose braid is a great option if you want to minimize tangling and keep your hair contained while you sleep.
Start the braid low at the nape of your neck and keep it loose.
Avoid pulling the braid tightly or securing it with a small elastic that can snag or break the hair
Opt for a small satin or silk scrunchie to secure the ends whenever possible.
Option 3. Silk or Satin Bonnet or Pillowcase
For even more protection, cover your hair with a silk or satin bonnet before bed.
This reduces the friction between your hair and your pillow while keeping your hair contained. It's especially helpful if you're trying to preserve a blowout, protect extensions, or reduce overnight frizz.
You can also use a silk or satin pillowcase if you don't like wearing a bonnet.
A pillowcase or bonnet is the main form of protection for those with hair too short to be tied back.
Silk vs Satin
Silk is a natural fiber, while satin describes the type of weave or finish and can be made from synthetic fibers such as polyester.
Both can provide a smoother surface than traditional cotton bedding, which can help reduce friction on the hair.
You don't necessarily need the most expensive option—what matters most is choosing a smooth fabric and being consistent with how you protect your hair at night.
